Bacterial Vaginosis

Introduction

Vagina is the main organ of female reproductive tract which is surrounded by many good bacteria, named, lactobacilli which produces acid and make the environment acidic around the vagina. This acidic environment hampers the growth of other bacteria’s and prevent vagina from infections and keep it healthy. But due to some reasons, if this normal balance of bacteria is disrupted, it allows the harmful bacteria to overgrow and cause vaginal infection, which is called bacterial vaginosis or vaginal bacterioses or Gardnerella vaginalis It is most common during the reproductive years i.e 15 to 44 years of age.

Causes

  • Imbalance in vaginal flora
  • Multiple sex partners
  • Douching or using harsh vaginal products
  • Poor hygiene practices
  • Excessive stress
  • Weak immune system
  • Natural lack of lactobacilli bacteria
  • Use of antibiotics
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation or menopause.

Symptoms

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge that is thin, grayish-white, or yellowish with a strong fish odor
  • Vaginal itching or irritations
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Vaginal discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse

Complications

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Infection of the uterus after delivery or abortions.
  • Pregnancy complications like preterm labor, premature birth, infection of the amniotic fluid
  • Increase risk of acquiring other STIs including HIV

Prevention’s

Preventing bacterial vaginosis involves maintaining good vaginal health and avoiding certain practices that can disrupt the natural balance of vaginal bacteria:-

  • Do not add bath oils, antiseptics, scented soaps, shampoo etc.
  • Don’t use perfumed intimate hygiene products
  • Avoid thongs & tight nylon tights
  • Do not use strong detergents to wash your under garments
  • Do not wash around your vagina & vulva too often.
  • Wear cotton or cotton-lined underwear.
  • Avoid douching
  • Limit your number of sex partners.
  • Avoid vaginal contact with anything that has touched your anus.

Bacterial vaginosis is often classified under ‘Yoni Vyapad’ (disorders of the female reproductive tract), particularly “Acharana Yoni Vyapad”, which involves imbalance of doshas causing abnormal vaginal discharge(Yoni srava) kapha dosha aggravation causes excess moisture discharge foul odour and infection- like symptoms. Poor digestion and improper diet also create ama(toxins) in the body, which can settle in the reproductive tract(yoni), disturbing it’s natural balance and leading to abnormal discharge. Also, Excessive consumption of heavy, oily and sour foods and improper lifestyle, unclean practices can lead to imbalance and infection.

How to Keep Vagina Clean?

  • Wash regularly with lukewarm water.
  • Use mild, unscented cleanser or soap, focusing on the external areas.
  • Dry thoroughly with a soft towel.
  • Always wipe from front to back, especially after using the toilet
  • Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing to prevent moisture build up.
  • Practice safe sex
  • Change menstrual products daily
  • Consult a doctor if needed.
