Acne is one of a common skin trouble that occurs when the hair follicles plug with oil and dead skin cells.

At What Age Does Acne Commonly Occur?

In Ayurveda, acne is referred to as ‘yuvanapidika or ‘mukhadushika’, meaning “pimples of youth”. It is primarily seen as a result of an imbalance in the pitta dosha- especially Bhrajaka pitta, which governs skin health and the vitiation of Rakta dhathu (blood tissue). This imbalance causes inflammation, excess oil (sebum), and blockage of the body’s subtle channels (srotas), especially Romakoopas (hair follicles).

Symptoms of Acne
Lesions are usually limited to the face, shoulders, upper chest and back. Severity of Symptoms may vary from:-
- Greasy skin(seborrhoea)
- Open plugged pores(blackheads)
- Closed plugged pores (white heads)
- Inflammatory, red, tender papules.
- Large, solid painful lumps under the skin (nodules)
- Painful, pus-filled lumps under skin (cystic lesions)
Triggering factors for ‘Acne’
- Hormonal change – androgens are the principal sebotrophic hormone that increase the sebum excretion
- Medication s- drug includes corticosteroids, lithium, oral contraceptives and anticonvulsants
- Exogenous substances – a mild form of acne may be aggravated by use of exogenous substances such as tars, chlorinated hydrocarbons or oily cosmetics.
- Underlying systemic diseases – individuals with poly-cystic ovary syndrome are more likely to have severe acne.
- Stress – stress may worsen the condition.
How to Prevent ‘Acne’?
- Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing and headgear, like hats and sports helmets.
- Live in a clean environment as air pollution can also worsen it.
- Stop using oily or greasy personal care products like heavy lotions and creams.
- Reduce stress.
- Avoid use of medications.
- Avoid high-sugar diet
- Choose to eat a balanced, nutritious diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
