Asthma

About Asthma

Normal airways consist of a series of tubes that carry air to and from the lungs, facilitating gas exchange. These airways include the nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchi-oles. The airways are responsible for filtering, warming and humidifying inhaled air as well as transporting it to tiny sac’s (alveoli) in the lungs where oxygen is transferred to the blood. When the person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra mucus which make it difficult to breathe, this condition is called asthma or bronchial asthma.

How Common is Asthma?

The prevalence of asthma increased steadily over the latter part of the last century in countries with a western lifestyle and is also increasing in developing countries. Current estimates suggest that 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma and an additional 100 million may be diagnosed with asthma by 2025.
